about

A darker approach to the old Scottish folk song 'The Deil's Awa' Wi' The Exciseman' (The Devil's Away With The Exciseman) originally written by the poet Robert Burns in 1792 whilst in employment as an Exciseman.

The song describes a Scottish town receiving a visit from the Devil himself who comes fiddling through the streets and abducts the Exciseman (At that time an officer of the state who would collect taxes and arrest smugglers and those committing fraudulent offences.)

The song suggests that perhaps the Exciseman found himself under a dark enchantment of the Devil's fiddling and danced off with him, much to the glee of the local citizens who would happily never see the Exciseman again.
